Movie Reviews:  Summer 2007

From Fantastic Four to the fantastical Pan's Labyrinth--you'll get all the dish on the hottest movies--it's never too early to get ready for Oscar!

A too-blue-eyed Jessica Alba should have saved her money for better contacts--oy!  Her hair was fried and so were her lines, and, perhaps worse, her role as a solid female hero.  The Thing, come on, he's got the guns, but poor Michael C., not much else.  Mr. Fantastic?  Not so much.  Johnny, Jessica's incorrigible brother, was too busy evolving as a human being, getting all introspective on the audiences a**, to make much of a punch himself.  My favorite character in the film was the Silver Surfer--he was shiny and didn't say much.  Overall, I'd give the film a 6 out of 10.  But what say you?  You want to hear more...coming right up!

Next, we examine the uber-est uber-mensch of all, Superman, and his Return (it's so Joseph Campbell).  For the twenty-first century audience, we had to bare with the single-mom, love-torn, Lois Lane, who waited years for her super man to return but to no avail.  She found the rich, talented, handsome, loving, and understanding Richard--played by the same fella as the Cyclops character in X1, 2 & 3--and yet, she is still pining for the man in the cape.  Hasn't anyone seen The Incredibles?  Capes are dangerous!  And so is this movie, despite the best efforts of director-with-a-heart, Bryan Singer.  Oh, how we missed you, Mr. Singer, in X3--thanks for sticking us, and our money, with that Ratner brat!  Overall, the movie was a 7 out of 10 at first glance.  The good news:  It gets better, along with Kevin Spacey's rendering of Lex Luther, after you watch it again--raising the rating to a healthy 8.5.

Hot Fuzz, from the same gang as Shaun of the Dead, was a slow starter but ultimately, extremely satisfying as one of the funniest films of the summer season.  Staying in the same general genre as SOD, Hot Fuzz gives Americans a much needed kick in the pants.  Come on in, the water's fine.  Housel Rating: 10/10!!!  :)

X3, the film XMen comic-fans waited for with bated breath, was a bit of a bummer.  Sadly, we lost our tried and true director from X1 and 2, leaving us with a Spielberg-approved NYU phenom with no emotional development, which translated perfectly to the screen.  Ratner should stick to what he knows:  films with men, guns, explosions, and more explosions.  Stay out of the comic-genre, Dude--you suck!  He totally WRECKED the whole XMen vibe by changing story-lines, killing Cyclops and the Professor, and oh yeah, Jean Grey!  Jean has the whole Phoenix-mythology around her, so she'll undoubtedly rise from the ashes of X3, as does Wolverine, who has his own feature film due out in 2009!  X4 is on it's way in May 2008...let us pray!  Housel Rating:  8/10, only because XMen is still one of the strongest comic franchises around and deserves mad-respect, y'all....
